Mickey Mouse / DISNEY
Disney invited us to write, produce and direct a personal take on Micky Mouse for his 50th anniversary. We did the project through our animation company FreakishKid. Needless to say it was an absolute honour to work with such an icon. The finished film was entirely made by hand in 2D, and we even wrote the score and recorded it in house. Props to Tom Bailey, Stu Gamble and all the team.
We began by watching a load of classic Mickey cartoons. We decided that he is a cheeky, but knowing (wink, wink) rascal. He's also dam cute. We then came up with an idea that would show off these attributes and threw him in there. Design work then started - we were asked for our own personal version of Mickey - so we got to designing his look and combining the best elements of his character throughout the decades. Its amazing how subtle some of the changes were throughout the years - we definitely wanted him to be young and cute, funny and wise, confident and naive... such a contradiction! In the end, after many tweaks, Disney approved our 'design'. So we then got down to posing, storyboarding, environment design, animatics, props, rigging, animation, sound, music, comp and edit. DAM!!!!
